'Significant Increase' In Car Thefts Reported In Somerset County
The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office reminds residents "to be vigilant in protecting themselves and their property."
SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A "significant increase" in the number of motor vehicle burglaries is being reported throughout Somerset County.
Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of County Detectives Francisco Roman Jr., issued a warning to residents on Friday.
The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Burglary Task Force and local police have seen a "noticeable rise in reports of motor vehicle burglaries."

Many of the burglaries involve unlocked vehicles and happen during overnight and early morning hours in residential neighborhoods and parking areas across multiple towns.
McDonald is reminding Somerset County residents "to be vigilant in protecting themselves and their property when it comes to motor vehicle burglaries."

Residents are told to always lock their vehicles, even when parked in driveways or residential areas, and to remove all valuables from their vehicles. This includes wallets, purses, jewelry, cash, electronics, and any other items that may attract criminal activity.
"Additionally, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to their local police department. Prompt reporting of suspicious activity can assist law enforcement in preventing crimes and identifying those responsible," said McDonald.

Information can also be provided through the Somerset County Communications Center at 1-888-577-TIPS (8477). All anonymous STOPit reports, and tips will be kept confidential.
