Somerset Co. Prosecutor's Top Cop Charged With Assault In DUI Crash

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — Somerset County Prosecutor's Office(SCPO) Chief of Detectives Francisco "Frank" Roman Jr. is facing new charges in connection with a March DUI crash in Somerville.

Roman Jr., 54, was charged with two counts of fourth-degree assault by auto, said Morris County Prosecutor Robert Carroll.

He is currently suspended without pay from his position at the SCPO.

On March 20, Roman was reportedly driving a 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe, owned by Somerset County, on South Bridge Street in Somerville.

Roman allegedly hit a parked Mercedes-Benz.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz and a passenger were injured, said Caroll.

Three additional parked vehicles were also damaged, said Carroll.

Roman allegedly showed signs of impairment when Somerville Police went to the crash.

He was arrested and at the Somerville Police station, Roman was issued a citation for driving while intoxicated. He was later released.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the investigation.

Roman is a 25-year veteran of law enforcement in New Jersey. He built his career inside the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, moving through narcotics, organized crime, major crimes and command assignments over more than two decades.
