Somerset County Begins Administering Pfizer Booster Shots

The rollout of the booster doses began on Saturday in Somerset County to specific eligible recipients recommended by the CDC.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 booster shots began to be rolled out on Saturday in Somerset County to specific eligible recipients recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"Somerset County continues to look to the CDC and science in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, an effort that has led to our highest in the state vaccination rate," said Commissioner Director Shanel Robinson. "We are pleased to begin offering booster shots at our clinics for those eligible residents who choose to receive one."

As of Monday, just under 232,000 Somerset County residents have been fully vaccinated out of the roughly 328,000 residents or just over 70 percent, according to the state's COVID-19 dashboard. (See below for a full breakdown of vaccination numbers by town in Somerset County)

The booster dose may help to increase protection for those who are at the highest risk of becoming infected with this virus and is only recommended for those who are eligible to receive the booster as per the CDC.

Eligible recipients must have completed their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series six or more months previously and meet one of the following conditions:

  • People aged 65-years and above;
  • Residents of long-term care settings;
  • People aged 18 to 64-years with underlying medical conditions; or
  • People aged 18 to 64-years with an increased risk of becoming infected by COVID-19 due to time spent in an occupational or institutional setting while considering their benefits and risk.

Eligible individuals must bring proof of vaccination and Somerset County residency to receive a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 booster dose at a SCDoH clinic. At this time, the CDC has not approved Moderna or Johnson & Johnson booster shots.

Somerset County offers the COVID-19 vaccine every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center, 876 E Main Street, Bridgewater. The Pfizer vaccine is available for Somerset County residents 12 and older. And the Moderna vaccine for those over 18 years old. Third doses are also available for the immunocompromised only.
