Somerset County VoTech Carpentry Students Build Playhouse For Local Kids At Agape House

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — Students enrolled in the Carpentry program at Somerset County Vocational and Technical High School (SCVTHS) recently delivered a children’s playhouse to Agape House.

The structure was designed and built by SCVTHS students. The project enabled them to put into practice skills they have learned in the classroom that apply to homebuilding – like cutting, framing and roofing – but on a smaller scale.

Carpentry students from all grade levels worked on the project over the past two school years, and, after some delays due to weather, were recently able to deliver it.

"We were glad to be able to provide the kids at Agape House with a place where they can play outside now that the weather is getting warmer," said Supervisor of Career and Technical Education Rob Carrig. "SCVTHS and Agape House have been working together for many years and we’re always excited when our students are able to use their skills to give back to the community."

The mission of Agape House, a division of Volunteers of America, is to provide emergency shelter for families in need.

Supplies for the project came from Lowes through a grant from SkillsUSA, a national workforce development organization whose goal is to empower students to become skilled professionals, career-ready leaders, and responsible community members.
