Distribution is scheduled to take place between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at Somerville YMCA, 2 Green Street, Somerville. Masks and social distancing are required. Recipients will be required to sign in and asked for their zip code, number of people in the household, and if they receive subsidy such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Medicaid and other programs.

Not receiving the subsidy will not preclude families from receiving meal bags.

“This is the first year we have done meal distribution during the holidays,” said Sheryl Guss, executive director of the Center. “We just felt that it was something we were called to do to help support our neighbors right here in our community. Hunger has been like another pandemic within this pandemic, and so many people have been affected – our goal is for everyone to be able to have a wonderful holiday dinner.”

The meal bags will contain dry goods, 5-pound bags of produce such as potatoes, onions, and carrots, apple juice, a dessert, and a ham. PeopleCare Center board members will assemble the bags, and Board President Joe Antico will transport the meals to the Somerville Y for distribution.

“We have been serving our neighbors who have been food insecure since the beginning of the pandemic, and partnering with the PeopleCare Center for this holiday meal bag distribution is just one more way to help bring some relief to those who need it most,” said Kate Russo, branch executive director at Somerville YMCA. “We want nothing more than for everyone in our community to have a joyous holiday season.”
