Statewide Outage Shuts Down All New Jersey’s MVC Agencies

A network update unexpectedly caused the outage at all New Jersey Motor Vehicle Licensing Centers Friday. It has since been restored.

NEW JERSEY — A statewide outage caused all New Jersey Motor Vehicle Licensing Centers to shut down briefly on Friday morning.

The NJMVC tweeted that a routine network update unexpectedly caused the statewide outage. The agencies were working with OIT to restore the system.

The system was restored then experienced another outage shortly afterward.

The outage in total lasted slightly less than three hours and affected in-person license transactions, said NJMVC Spokesman William Connolly.

As of 10:52 a.m. on Friday, NJMVC said "MVC Licensing Centers are now fully operational."

"This is the first time we've experienced a system-wide outage in well over a year," said Connolly. "We are working with OIT to determine why a routine update caused an outage, and will address the root causes to ensure it doesn’t happen again."
