Shelter In Place Lifted, Corrosive Liquid Spill Cleaned In Bridgewater

Breaking: The Shelter in Place has been lifted and the corrosive spill on Finderne Ave has been cleaned up, Police said at 3:30 a.m.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — UPDATE: The Shelter in Place recommendation has been lifted and the corrosive spill on Finderne Avenue has been cleaned up, Bridgewater Police announced at 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

All roads are reopened.

The roads had been closed since 9 a.m. on Wednesday after a tractor trailer flipped over spilling a corrosive material in the area. Residents within a one block radius of the area were told to stay inside as a result on Wednesday.

"As a precaution, residents living within a half block radius of this intersection are instructed to continue to shelter in place, keep windows closed and A/C off," Bridgewater Police reported.

Around 9 a.m. Wednesday, a 1999 Freightliner tractor owned by Solid Logistics LLC Newark was driving westbound on State Highway 28 and attempted to make a left turn on Finderne Avenue.

The truck struck a traffic light pole located on the west side of Finderne Avenue and rolled onto its passenger side, Bridgewater Police reported.

The trailer it is was pulling contained a corrosive liquid, which was released onto the roadway. The driver of the vehicle was not injured, police said.

Somerset County Haz-Mat along with state and local agencies are actively cleaning up the scene.

Bridgewater Police Facebook will be updated as the situation progresses.

As a result all residents in the Finderne area of town were told to seek shelter around 1 p.m. due to a hazardous materials incident. Adamsville School was also dismissed early as a result.

"The scene is stable, but out of caution Adamsville school is being dismissed early today. Parents of Adamsville school should be getting an E blast from the school with the dismissal time. County Hazmat is in place doing air quality monitoring.," Bridgewater Police posted on Facebook.

"Please do not call to ask questions about this incident. We will update as soon as possible," police announced through Nixle at 11:50 a.m.

Some roads are closed until further notice, police announced earlier.
