'Yes, That Was An Earthquake': Bridgewater Township Sends Out Warning

Officials are asking residents to refrain from calling 911 or the Township Police unless it is an emergency.

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — "Yes - that was an earthquake!" said Bridgewater Township Government.

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake detected with an epicenter identified seven kilometers north northeast of Whitehouse Station in New Jersey, according to the United States Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes.

Reports of buildings shaking began about 10:20 a.m. and lasted for approximately 30 seconds.

Bridgewater Township Police and Officials are asking residents to refrain from calling 911 or the police line unless it is an emergency.

"The Bridgewater Police Department and the Bridgewater Office of Emergency Management are aware of a confirmed 4.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred earlier today. As of now, no injures or damage has been reported," said police. "We ask you to not call 9-1-1 unless you have an actual emergency. While unlikely, there is a possibility for aftershocks."

If residents are experiencing issues with your utilities, they are asked to contact their service provider unless there is an emergency.

The Township offered a few important points:

  1. Do NOT call 9-1-1 unless you have an actual emergency. Please do not override the 9-1-1 lines with questions regarding the earthquake.
  2. Expect aftershocks - there may be small tremors in the next few hours or days.
  3. Drive carefully in case you experience any infrastructure damage traveling around.
