CALDWELLS, NJ — A $1.14 million series of upgrades has crossed the finish line for the baseball field at Grover Cleveland Park, located in Caldwell and Essex Fells.
The new additions include a synthetic infield playing surface and natural grass sod in the outfield. Also, new fencing, dugouts, walking paths and irrigation and drainage systems were installed.
Zenith Construction from Orange was awarded a publicly bid contract for $1,144,125 to perform the construction work. The Department of Public Works designed the improvements in-house. The project was funded through Essex County's capital budget.
Work began in March and took five months to complete.
The work got a thumbs-up from the Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy, as well as Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr., and Essex County commissioners Carlos Pomares and Len Luciano.
"I am a historian, so anything with Grover Cleveland's name perks up my interest," Pomares said. "He loved and had a great respect for the outdoors, so to improve this park so more people can enjoy it is, in a way, a tribute to his memory."
