CALDWELL, NJ — Caldwell is taking another step towards making upgrades on a flood-prone local street.
On Monday, the borough posted a notice to bidders for a drainage improvement project on Chestnut Street.
Small, Minority and Women's Business Enterprises are encouraged to obtain specifications and compete for the contracts. Sealed bids will be received and opened at Borough Hall on Sept. 22.
"This contract is to be funded in part by the Essex County Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funded Projects Program," the borough's notice states.
Caldwell netted a $50,000 check from the county under the Community Development Block Grant and Emergency Solutions Grant awards in 2025.
The federal programs – which are funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by local government bodies – pay for programs such as affordable housing, poverty relief and infrastructure development.
Chestnut Street is roughly 490 linear feet in length and 28 feet wide. The roadway intersects Oak Grove Road and is a dead end. A lack of drainage improvements along the street from Oak Grove Road to the bottom of Chestnut Street has led to flooding in the past.
