Authorities Order Evacuation at Caldwell University on Thursday

A potentially dangerous chemical needed to be removed from the school's science building.

Caldwell police and fire responders – working at the request of Caldwell University administrators – conducted a limited evacuation of the campus on Thursday afternoon in order to remove a potentially dangerous chemical from Raymond Hall.

According to police, university officials called the department to get help removing the chemical from the school’s science lab.

An evacuation of Raymond Hall and the adjacent buildings was done as a safety measure.

“When we first got there, we needed to assess what it was,” a police spokesman told Patch. “[The evacuation] was just precautionary.”

The university cancelled afternoon and evening classes following the evacuation.
