NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — North Caldwell school officials say they're educating 710 students in buildings meant for 585. They want to borrow money to expand, and to do that, they need to hold a public referendum in fall.

Before sending the plan to the state education department, they're having three meetings with the public.

The North Caldwell Board of Education held a presentation at their last regular meeting two weeks ago, and will hold a second, bigger presentation Tuesday.

There will be a third discussion Dec. 13. The board anticipates a vote on Sept. 26, 2023.

Each meeting will be held at the Grandview School at 7:30, with a remote option (see the links for this week below).

The Details

"North Caldwell currently educates 710 students in buildings originally designed for 585 students," the district said in a message on Nov. 9. "A bond referendum vote is necessary to keep class sizes small and to create facilities that meet future educational needs."

"The Board of Education has been paying close attention to new development, approved future development and existing home turnover, and its impact on our schools," said the message. "We are now on a path to accomplish needed improvements and additions through a bond referendum, a fiscally responsible plan that requires voter approval."

More details about the plan and meetings are on this page.

Tuesday's Meeting

The upcoming meeting will feature an appearance from district architect Allen Barnett, Di Cara Rubino Architects and Board of Education members who will present their plan, officials said.

"We welcome your continued involvement in the months leading up to the vote anticipated on September 26, 2023," the district said.

Then, at the Dec. 13 meeting, the board will hold more discussion. They may then vote on whether to approve and submit the plan to the NJ Department of Education.

The state’s review and approval process are anticipated to take three to six months, officials have said.

"The Board of Education’s decision to move forward with a bond referendum is one of the most important we have considered during our tenure," officials said in their message this month. "It will have a lasting impact on North Caldwell Public Schools and the community we serve. We thank you and welcome your continued involvement."
