NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — This week, North Caldwell will hold the first of three meetings to introduce a plan to bond to pay to improve school buildings — a plan that may go to a public vote next September 2023.

The district will give a presentation on the plan at a Board of Education meeting Tuesday, then hold a bigger presentation Nov. 29 and then have a third discussion Dec. 13. They anticipate a vote on Sept. 26, 2023.

Each meeting will be held at the Grandview School at 7:30, with a remote option (see the links for Tuesday's meeting below).

"North Caldwell currently educates 710 students in buildings originally designed for 585 students," the district said in a message this month. "A bond referendum vote is necessary to keep class sizes small and to create facilities that meet future educational needs."

"The Board of Education has been paying close attention to newdevelopment, approved future development and existing home turnover, and its impact on our schools," said a message. "We are now on a path to accomplish needed improvements and additions through a bond referendum, a fiscally responsible plan that requires voter approval."

Tuesday, the district’s architect, Allen Barnett, Principal with Di Cara Rubino Architects, will give a presentation, and the Board of Education will discuss details, the district said.

Details will include replacing roofs, connecting the Gould and Mountain buildings, adding parking, and more.

At the Dec. 13 meeting, the board is likely to vote on whether to approve and submit the plan to the NJ Department of Education. The state’s review and approval process are anticipated to take three to six months, officials said

"The Board of Education’s decision to move forward with a bond referendum is one of the most important we have considered during our tenure," officials said in their message this month. "It will have a lasting impact on North Caldwell Public Schools and the community we serve. We thank you and welcome your continued involvement."
