Crowding Sugar Out of Your Life

Holistic Health Coach Eve J. Cannon shares tips and a recipe to help you successfully kick your sugar cravings without missing a thing!

When it comes to sugar, most of us crave it, some of us depend on it, and few of us have successfully beat the urge for the sweet stuff! Admittedly, I am one of the many people with a sweet tooth, and over the years I've spent learning about nutrition and improving my own diet, I've armed myself with easy tools that anyone can use to stop being a slave to sugar cravings.

Any time you are trying to eliminate something unhealthy from your diet, it's important to replace it with something more nourishing. This way, you are not simply denying yourself the pleasure of eating certain foods and going hungry, but rather substituting them with more fulfilling, less sabotaging food choices.

Using sugar as an example, I recommend swapping the white refined stuff for naturally sweet foods. Fruits are a common choice, but vegetables are even better. There are certain vegetables that are lower in sugar than fruits and will provide you with more subtle, natural sweetness to level out your blood sugar levels as well as provide high quality nutrients and fiber to nourish your body and give you lasting energy.

Root vegetables are a great place to start. Sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, beets, and turnips are all sweet when cooked and easy to find and prepare. Here's an easy recipe to try:

  • Use one, two, three, four or five of the sweet vegetables mentioned above.
  • Chop the hardest ones, like carrots and beets, into smaller pieces. Softer vegetables, like onions, can be cut into larger chunks.
  • Use a medium-sized pot and add enough water to barely cover the vegetables. You may want to check the water level while cooking and add more water if needed. Remember, vegetables on the bottom will get cooked more than the ones on the top. Cook until desired softness. The softer the vegetables get, the sweeter they become.
  • When the vegetable cooked to your satisfaction, empty the ingredients into a large bowl, flavor as desired and eat. You can save the cooking water to drink, too!
