Dog Tails - Tigger

All about Tigger, a 5 month old puppy in need of a home.

So there we were at Woofstock, an annual event that takes place in Newark, NJ. They close off Lafayette street every year, and on that day, the Associated Humane Society of Newark brings about 25 dogs to meet the public.

Most of these dogs are either older, are bully breeds, and have been largely ignored in the shelter.  With summer coming, shelter overcrowding can only get worse, and these dogs have been around for a long time - too long in an already overcrowded shelter.

With music playing and volunteers handling dogs, these dogs will not be ignored.  They are sitting on laps, licking faces, and making fast friends.  Some of these friends will sign up to be foster parents to get them out of the shelter to help a rescue have time to adopt them out.  The magic that rescue does is pull dogs, foster them out, get them socialized around other dogs, people, kids in much less stressful environments than a noisy, crowded shelter.

Today was Tigger's day to leave the shelter.  His new temporary home will be with Kim and Michelle in their home with their three dogs.  It doesn't take long before Kim is texting me photos of Tigger relaxing with them on their deck, or quietly laying next to one of the other dogs.  He seems happy now.  He's underweight by about 25 lbs, but now he's come to the right place because Michelle can cook, and she's already promised to help plump him up.

Tigger was one of the lucky ones.  Many aren't so lucky, but today is Tigger's day. Starting today, Tigger won't be sleeping in a cage on a cement floor alone.  He'll be sleeping at the foot of his foster parent's bed.
