Goodbye to Trolleys—Hello to Buses!

It was 61-years-ago this weekend, after a run of 56 years, that trolleys were replaced by buses in Caldwell.

Thank you to S.M. Kent for sharing Gene Collerd's photo of Lt. John Cable boarding the last Caldwell trolley 61 years ago. We looked it up in The Progress (4/4/1952) and this was the caption:

“Lieutenant John Cable of the Caldwell Police Department boarding the last trolley car early Sunday morning. After the trolley, upon which was printed “Damn the buses-Full speed ahead,” started for Bell Street, Montclair, fifty new Public Service buses were put into action as replacement service.”

Anybody remember that last trolley ride on March 30, 1952? Or the first days of buses in Caldwell?
