Always consume an adequate amount of carbs, both before and after workouts, as this is the main source of fuel that your body (muscles) runs on. If you're not eating enough carbs your body will start using protein as fuel. This is not very efficient and will hinder your muscle gain. Whey protein is a fast acting protein which is great for a pre- and post-workout meal. But for optimal health, make sure to eat plenty of fish, chicken, nuts, legumes, low-fat dairy and other lean meats.
