West Essex High School Art History Students Participate in "Mural Madness"

Art History students at West Essex create murals copying famous works of arts using pastels in just a few hours.

West Essex High School students in Ms. Eileen Dormer's Advanced Placement Art History class learned the pressures of being artists with a deadline as they spent March 22 creating murals in the high school hallways based on famous works of art they selected.

The event was part of the class' annual celebration of Youth Art Month, March Masterpiece Madness. About 50 students participated in the “Masterpiece Mural Madness.”

The students, working in chalks, completed their masterpieces in just a few hours and then hung them in the cafeteria. Faculty and students were then asked to vote for their favorites looking for the most faithful rendering of the art. Although all murals received some votes, the winner was the recreation of the surrealistic “Collective Invention” by Renee Magritte, drawn by Chris Mei, a junior from Roseland, Madie Mastroberte, a junior from Fairfield, Sarah Jacobson, a junior from North Caldwell, Ariana Daly, a sophomore from Essex Fells, and Alejandra Torres, a junior from Fairfield.
