Student Named Finalist in National Competition

West Essex High School junior Andrew Spero of Roseland was named one of ten finalists in the Chicago Architecture Foundation's (CAF) 2013 DiscoverDesign.org National High School Architecture Competition. Andrew redesigned the West Essex High School Library for the 21st Century and submitted the project for the competition. A jury team of 63 architects, engineers and designers from across the country evaluated the entries. To see Andrew's design, visit DiscoverDesign.org/competition2013. Students were asked to make their design "people-centric, not just book-centric."CAF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing public interest and education in architecture.
In January, 2012, it launched DiscoverDesign.org, a unique web-based learning tool that gives high school students the opportunity to solve real-wrold design problems. It also created the design competition to get students involved with design and creative problem solving. This year, 226 teens from 32 high schools in 16 states submitted designs to the contest. The top three winners will be announced in mid-June with the first place winner receiving an architectural trip to Chicago this summer.
