West Essex Middle School Students Create New York City Sculptures

West Essex Middle School eighth grades spent weeks creating sculptures which will be displayed around the school.

Art Teacher Sheryl Tekel's eighth grade students just finished completing giant art sculptures based on a New York-city theme. This project was inspired by famous artists who have made giant sculptures, such as Claes Oldenburg as well as American Pop Artist Andy Warhol. Each group of four or five students selected a landmark or attraction that makes New York City special.

The groups constructed their projects using cardboard, newspaper, foam and other recyclables. Afterwards, they plastered and painted the sculptures to make them look realistic and creative. The groups are making: The Empire State building, a giant hot dog stand, a double decker sightseeing bus and a memorial to the Twin Towers. The average length of the food sculptures is around five feet long!

The sculptures will be displayed by the main office or in Middle School cafeteria and will be displayed in an installation with props to create an environment reflecting the sculpture. Mrs. Tekel and her fourth period students are looking forward to the community seeing their creations!
