Volunteer Librarian Ann Marie Calandro began volunteering more than 14 years ago when her child was a student here. Even after her child graduated, she still continued to volunteer several hours per week organizing the magazines and returning books to their shelves, according to Middle School Librarian Catherine Spinella.
Last week, Ms. Calandro retired from her volunteer position to move out-of-state. The Middle School Library honored Ms. Calandro with a party. Middle School Principal David Montgomery presented Ms. Calandro with a certificate honoring her for her more than 14 years of volunteer work at West Essex. Teachers and librarians enjoyed refreshments, wished Ms. Calandro well and presented her with a few small gifts to thank her.
"I am not good with speeches, but I am going to miss everybody," Ms. Calandro said. Ms. Calandro also thanked Mr. Montgomery "for all you do for West Essex."

Ms. Calandro was one of the first volunteers in the library and also inspired and fostered the creation of the library volunteer program, Spinella said.
Seventh Grade Reading Teacher Erica Serio came to the library to say goodbye to Ms. Calandro. "She is very sweet and very helpful and she always makes me laugh," Ms. Serio said, adding she is always bringing her classes to the library.
