What Freedom Means to a Shelter Cat
Freedom: Seen through the eyes of a shelter animal...
At the Wayne Township Animal Shelter we are lucky to have a room that we call the "free roaming cat room", which is a chance for a few of our furry cat friends to experience freedom for awhile outside of their cages.
And it's amazing how happy and content our cats are just being in this small and simple room. Even though it's not much bigger than most people's bathrooms, it means the world to them to be able to stretch their legs, socialize, lounge, walk at will, and more importantly, just to simply be a cat...
These cats spend most of their hours bored and lonely in a metal shelter cage, just waiting for someone to come in and give them a chance and a forever home. Some have been waiting a very long time for no good reason (especially Potsie the grey cat in the middle of the photo), overlooked with no choice but to continue to wait in their cages.

They get a small taste of freedom that our "free roaming cat room" allows, but it breaks my heart to see them so happy and grateful for this temporary opportunity, and know that they don't even realize what real freedom is, and how much better it can get in a big house where they are free to roam all the time and have a loving owner to cuddle with too. They just appreciate the simple things in this room and accept their fate and continue to wait patiently.
I think we can all learn a lot from shelter animals. Even after being abandoned, abused and unloved, they still remain the same loving soul, pure at heart, and always seem to be willing to give another person a chance, even after they have been let down before, sometimes multiple times. And all the while, they never stop appreciating the very simplest things in life...
