What is Pentecost?

What exactly is this holiday that we celebrate this weekend known as Pentecost Sunday? Churches of all traditions observe it, but why dedicate one Sunday annually to remember this day?

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Have you ever wondered about this day? What exactly is Pentecost Sunday? Churches of all traditions observe this festival which is Jewish in origin and celebrated the harvest or the first fruits. So why do Christians dedicate one Sunday annually to remember this day?

According to the Christian Biblical account (Acts Chapters 1 & 2) this is the day the Holy Spirit with the sound of a mighty rushing wind descended upon human beings. There were 120 people including the disciples who gathered in an upper room as they began to speak in other languages. The Apostle Peter rose to speak the message of Jesus to the crowds, and the result was a ‘harvest’ of 3,000 people who joined the early Christian church marking a new beginning for followers of Jesus. In our modern world, we remember the unity that was present on that day among the believers. We remember that this message of abundant life is for all nations and languages. However, we also reflect on the happenings of the early church. According to the Bible people were healed physically, transformed emotionally and spiritually. There was an impartation of supernatural power, and don’t we all need power for living?

Today, there is a re-emergence of people who seek the full experience of the Biblical account. In 1914 a fellowship of ministers known as the Assemblies of God formed with 300 people, and today that movement has grown to over 65 million people world-wide who are seeking a genuinely Biblical Pentecostal experience. While Life Source Church in West Caldwell is one of over 200 in Assemblies of God Churches in New Jersey it is the only one in the Caldwells, Roseland, Essex Fells Fairfield, Cedar Grove and Verona.
