Brach Eichler Presents ‘Burton L. Eichler Award’ to Rheumatologist and Environmental Health Specialist Dr. Aly Cohen Seventh Annual Eichler Award Honors the Legacyof Healthcare Law Pioneer Burton Eichler

John D. Fanburg, managing member of Brach Eichler LLC and chair of its health law practice, presented the “Burton L. Eichler Award” to Dr. Aly Cohen, a rheumatologist, integrative medicine and environmental health specialist in Monroe Township, NJ. As a sponsor of “New Jersey’s Top Docs” for the last seven years, Brach Eichler recognized Dr. Cohen for her extensive work in understanding how environmental exposures impact human health and for founding The Smart Human, an environmental health and wellness platform. The award was presented at New Jersey Monthly’s “Top Doctors” reception, which was held for all honorees at The Manor in West Orange, NJ on November 16, 2016.

In 2009, Dr Cohen became heavily involved in understanding how exposures in our environment, such as everyday chemicals and cellular radiation, affect human health. Since that time, she has collaborated on projects with organizations such as Women’s Voices from the Earth and the Breast Cancer Fund and has trained extensively with Dr. Andrew Weil and colleagues. Her strong passion led her to start her own environmental health and wellness platform "The Smart Human," in 2014. Dr. Cohen has also created CME-accredited programs on environmental health topics and lectures to hospitals and medical schools nationally. She has received grants to create curriculum for middle and high schools and hopes to make this curriculum available to all students across the U.S. Recently, she completed the textbook, "Integrative Environmental Medicine" for the Dr. Andrew Weil academic series with Oxford University Press due out this February. She has been a medical contributor to Fox News NY, EverydayHealth.com and U.S. News and World Report.

“Dr. Cohen truly believes that environmental health information is grossly underestimated when it comes to chronic health issues, such as autoimmunity, diabetes, obesity, cancer and developmental issues in children, and has made it her mission to teach and educate colleagues, parents and teens, and communities in general on safe, practical approaches to reducing chemical and radiation exposures,” said Fanburg, who presented Dr. Cohen with a plaque to recognize her hard work and dedication and a check for $1,000 to be donated to the Breast Cancer Fund.

About the Eichler Award

Brach Eichler created the Burton L. Eichler Award to honor the memory and legacy of Burt Eichler, widely regarded as the pioneer of healthcare law in New Jersey, who died seven years ago. Mr. Eichler co-founded the firm of Brach Eichler Rosenberg Silver Bernstein Hammer & Gladstone PC in 1967, which is today Brach Eichler LLC. His contributions to the field of healthcare and hospital law in New Jersey made his name synonymous with the practice. In the early 1970s, he paved the way for the establishment of many New Jersey healthcare “firsts.” For example, he was responsible for shepherding the licensing of the first non-hospital-owned, free-standing dialysis facility, the first MRI, the first free-standing ambulatory surgical center, and the first lithotripter. In addition, for more than three decades, he was committed to Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

“Burt Eichler was not only one of the most respected members of the New Jersey Bar, he was also a man of enormous integrity, giving tirelessly to his community. The Burton L. Eichler Award is the firm’s way of honoring his legacy of leadership in the health care industry and his spirit of giving to the community,” noted Fanburg.
