Caldwell Historic Preservation Commission Recognizes Patriotic Spirit

The Caldwell Historic Preservation Commission has presented its first ever Certificates of Recognition for outstanding patriotic displays, honoring a local resident and longtime Caldwell business for their community spirit during the summer of 2026.

Mary Lou Coffin and Fat Fish Taco were selected for their exceptional displays celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Their creative and enthusiastic decorations added to the patriotic spirit throughout the community and helped make Caldwell’s streets and downtown a little more festive this summer.

Both Coffin and Steve Benyo, owner of Fish Taco, were pleasantly surprised when they were presented with their certificates, as the recognition had not been publicly announced. The Historic Preservation Commission simply took notice of the effort and pride they put into their displays and wanted to acknowledge their contribution to the community.

Coffin's recognition is especially meaningful given her family's long history with the Hillside Avenue home. The house was built by her uncle, who constructed it by hand and personally cleared every rock from the property. The design of the home was modeled after the historic Grover Cleveland Birthplace on Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell, creating a unique connection between the residence and the community's history.

Fat Fish Taco was also recognized for its outstanding patriotic display and its longstanding presence in the Caldwell community. The popular local establishment has been part of the community for 11 years, making it a familiar and much-loved fixture for residents and visitors alike.

The Commission wanted to recognize both Coffin and Fat Fish Taco for going above and beyond to celebrate the community and the nation's milestone 250th anniversary. Their displays demonstrate the community pride and spirit that help make Caldwell such a special place to live, work and visit.

The certificates are the first of what the Commission hopes will become an ongoing way to recognize residents and local businesses that help enhance the character and appearance of the community.

As summer comes to a close, the Commission is already looking ahead. Members will be keeping an eye out in the coming months for the residence and business that create the most outstanding fall display.
