CALDWELL, NJ — It’s a sign that Caldwell is moving forward, officials say.

The Borough of Caldwell recently relocated its municipal offices and library to their permanent space at 80 Bloomfield Avenue – a move that has been years in the making.

As part of the move, the public library trailers at 24 Smull Avenue are being hauled away, a development that sparked a “satisfying goodbye” from local officials.

“Today is a visible reminder that Caldwell is moving forward,” Mayor Garrett Jones said.

According to Jones, the “temporary” trailers served as the borough hall and library for years. The new municipal building and library is expected to serve residents for generations, he said.

“It's incredibly satisfying to finally say goodbye to the trailers and that era in Caldwell's history,” Jones said.

Caldwell Business Administrator Alex Palumbo said this week’s milestone is more than the removal of some trailers – it’s the conclusion of a successful transition to a permanent Borough Hall.

“From an operational standpoint, we've modernized municipal services, created a better workplace for our employees, and positioned the borough to serve residents more effectively for decades to come,” Palumbo said, noting that the parking lot where these trailers stood will now be renovated to provide additional parking for local businesses and residents.

The borough will be meeting with contractors this week to discuss the layout, grading and paving of this section of the lot. Work is anticipated to start as “soon as possible,” he added.

Details about the project were previously unveiled at a borough council meeting in 2024.
