Caldwell Woman Rescued From Overturned Car After Crash

Police and firefighters pulled the woman from the flipped car, which was "swaying back and forth along the curb of the sidewalk."

Caldwell area emergency responders rescued a local woman from an overturned SUV after a multi-car crash left her trapped on Tuesday morning.

According to the Caldwell Police Department, the crash took place around 9:30 a.m., when a white SUV collided with a 2005 Chevy Malibu while the vehicles were passing through the intersection of Forest Avenue and Hatfield Street.

“The crash is still under investigation but it appears from the initial investigation that one of the vehicles ran the stop sign causing the crash,” Police Chief James Bongiorno told Patch.

After receiving multiple 911 calls, police officers arrived to find a 77-year-old Caldwell woman trapped in the SUV, which had overturned on its passenger side and was “swaying back and forth along the curb of the sidewalk.”

As one officer moved a patrol car next to the SUV to brace it from tipping over, two other officers jumped on top of the car in attempt to secure and free the woman.

After officers cut through the seatbelt, the woman was able to stand upright inside the vehicle.

At that time, responders from the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department and the West Essex First Aid Squad arrived on the scene, and firefighters cut out the front windshield of the vehicle, allowing the woman to escape.

The WEFAS evaluated the woman, who stated that she wasn’t in pain and turned down medical assistance.

The 83-year-old driver and 82-year-old passenger of the Malibu sustained minor injuries but also declined medical treatment, police stated.

Both vehicles were towed and the roadway was cleared around 11:06 a.m.
