Caldwells Kiwanis Club Draws Diverse Lineup Of Speakers (PHOTOS)

Guest speakers at the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex have come from Lamp for Haiti, the Port of New York/NJ and the Turtle Back Zoo.

CALDWELLS, NJ — What does Lamp for Haiti, the Port of New York/NJ and the Turtle Back Zoo have in common? They’ve all had recent guests speakers appear at the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex.

LAMP FOR HAITI

“On August 23 at the Cloverleaf Restaurant, the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex made a donation to the Lamp for Haiti. Each year, the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell West Essex sponsors ten children through the organization, Lamp for Haiti. On August 16, 2018, the founder, Dr. James Morgan, stopped by to have lunch with us and accept the sponsorship check. Dr. Morgan sent us a few photos of the children we sponsor.”

PORT HARBORMASTER

“On August 16 at the Cloverleaf Restaurant Win Winters, a recently retired harbormaster of the Port, [spoke] about his interesting career and the things he has experienced. The Port of New York and New Jersey is the port district of the New York-Newark metropolitan area, encompassing the region within approximately a 25-mile (40 km) radius of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. It includes the system of navigable waterways in the New York–New Jersey Harbor Estuary, which runs along 650 miles (1,050 km) of shoreline in the vicinity of New York City and northeastern New Jersey, as well as the region's airports and supporting rail and roadway distribution networks. Considered one of the largest natural harbors in the world, the port is by tonnage the third largest in the United States and the busiest on the East Coast.”

ONE SIMPLE WISH

“On August 9 at the Cloverleaf Restaurant, the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell/West Essex heard a presentation by Danielle Gletow. Danielle is the founder of One Simple Wish and has spent the past decade raising awareness and support for thousands of children that have experienced abuse, neglect and foster care all over the U.S.”

TURTLE BACK ZOO

“On Thursday, July 19 at the Cloverleaf Restaurant, Adam Kerins and Pat Horan from the Zoological Society of New Jersey which supports the Turtleback Zoo presented a program to the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex about the Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ. They talked about the zoo and what they are doing with the animals and their ten year plan to make the zoo, bigger and better.”

WEST CALDWELL FIRE DEPARTMENT

“On June 7 at the Cloverleaf Restaurant, John Medina of the West Caldwell Fire Department spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex to talk about fire safety during the summer months.”

CANINE ASSISTANTS

“On May 31 at the Cloverleaf Restaurant, Tom & Michele Meli of Mickey’s Kids, a foundation which supports Canine Assistants. Tom & Michele are the proud owners of Liberty and Axel, two therapy dogs which visit schools, nursing homes, and patients and who will also be joining us at our meeting. Mickey’s Kid’s raises money to help supply Service/Therapy or Hospital Facilities dogs to children and adults in the NJ Area. No recipient is asked to pay for a dog. Tom & Michele have placed over thirty dogs in the New Jersey area with their fundraising efforts. This program comes to us through our own Sponsored Youth - the Trinity Academy Builder’s Club has raised over $1,000 to support this organization this year. Liberty and Axel have come to Trinity to meet the children and have already become fast friends with our Builder's Club Members.”

AUTHOR AND PROFESSOR

“On May 24 at the Cloverleaf Restaurant Professor John Wefing talk about his book, The Life and Times of Richard J. Hughes. His book explores Hughes' influential public service of this two-term New Jersey governor. He was the only person in New Jersey history to serve as both governor and chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. John B. Wefing's research includes interviews with prominent politicians and leaders who worked with Hughes at various points in his career. The result is a rich story of a public servant who possessed a true ability to work with members of both political parties and played a significant role in shaping modern New Jersey.”
