STEM Workshop: Makey Makey

STEM Workshop: Makey Makey

Event Details

Roseland Free Public Library, 20 Roseland Ave, Roseland, NJ, 07068

Join us for a 90-minute, hands-on STEM program for students in grades 2–5 that introduces the concept of conductivity and basic circuits through creative exploration with Makey Makey kits. Led by the Byte Right Group, a team of three local, certified elementary educators offering a STEAM enrichment program. Through hands-on Makey Makey and LEGO robotics kits, children explore hardware, software, and programming. Students learn how circuits work, how code connects to physical devices, and how engineers design solutions to real-world problems.

The session will begin with an engaging challenge designed to spark curiosity: Utilize the Makey Makey kit to connect wires for an LED light, video game connection, and piano app. This activity introduces conductivity in a concrete, problem-solving context and encourages students to think critically about how electricity flows through different materials.

Following this introduction, students will be guided through the components of the Makey Makey kit. Each part will be introduced and explained in an age-appropriate way, including how the device connects to a computer and how alligator clips can be used to complete a circuit. Students will explore the idea that the human body is conductive, experimenting with simple connections—such as hand-holding—to see how circuits can be completed.
