Cars Stolen, Burglarized in North Caldwell

One car recovered thanks to navigation system.

Two cars were stolen out of driveways in North Caldwell early Sunday morning, according to police.

Both incidents, which occurred between midnight and 6 a.m., involved unlocked cars, said North Caldwell Police Chief Mark Deuer.

A 2005 Chevy Avalanche taken from Hickory Drive was recovered on North 12th Street in Newark around 10:30 a.m. Sunday with the help of the in-car navigation system. Newark Police stood by while North Caldwell picked up the car, which was driven back to the borough and returned without damage to the owner.

A 2009 Nissan Maxima reported stolen from a home on Birch Avenue remains missing.

Four cars were also entered in the early morning hours Sunday, two on White Oak Drive, one on Knollwood Drive and one on Farmstead Road, Deuer said.

Deuer said various items, including change and global positioning systems, were reported missing from the cars, which had all been left unlocked.

Police are advising residents to lock their cars and not leave keys or valet keys in cars.
