Committee Will Study Mayor, Council Salaries In Caldwell

An ad hoc committee will be taking a look at the salaries of the Caldwell mayor and council, borough officials announced.

CALDWELL, NJ — An ad hoc committee will be taking a look at the salaries of the Caldwell mayor and council, borough officials recently announced.

During the Oct. 6 meeting of the Borough Council, Mayor John Kelley introduced the formation of a committee, which will include himself and the borough administrator. It will be tasked with studying the salaries of the mayor and council for 2021 and beyond.

Kelley said the committee plans to examine borough policy regarding salaries and come back to the council with ideas and discussion before the year’s end.

Kelley appointed council members Jonathan Lace and Frances DePalma-Iozzi to the committee.

“I appreciate this appointment and look forward to working with Councilwoman DePalma-Iozzi to propose a level of compensation for governing body members that has its basis on the principle that any expenditures of public funds must have public justification and on the best practices of surrounding communities,” Lace stated.

The recommendation of the committee and the decision of the council will be made “in the daylight of public notification,” Lace said, adding that the committee will help to bring “greater accountability and transparency” to local council salaries.
