Dumbwaiter Motor Cause of Fire at Motherhouse
Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department clears smoke from building, responded earlier to alarm on Overlook Road.
A fire broke out Monday at the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell.
The fire was reported at 12:42 p.m. and was out upon arrival, according to Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department Chief Anthony Grenci.
Grenci said the fire was caused by the motor of a dumbwaiter located in the basement of the Ryerson Avenue building. Fans were used to clear the basement and first floor of smoke.

West Caldwell and Verona fire departments responded to the scene for back up, along with the West Essex First Aid Squad.
The scene was cleared at 2 p.m.

Before the fire at Caldwell College, the Caldwell Fire Department responded to an alarm at 21 Overlook Road at 12:15 p.m.
Grenci said there was a fire in the gas fireplace which did not spread.
