Newark School of the Arts Visual Arts Course Descriptions

The Newark School of the Arts (NSA) Visual Arts Department offers a wide range of visual arts classes designed to provide creative rigor through the sequential approaches to art, experimentation, and group practice, leading to in-houses exhibitions and presentations.  NSA is committed to the study of the arts which aid the adult and child student in the incorporation of ideas, concepts and processes, and perception of their world.  Professional visual arts teachers will prepare each student to actively participate and contribute to their own personal, professional, academic and creative growth.  NSA welcomes you to enroll in our visual arts classes, designed with your creative needs and aspirations in mind.    

Tuition: $425.00

Registration Fee:  $55 per family and $30 for seniors.  The registration fee is for one school year (two 17-week sessions)

Drawing and Painting III (Advanced Media and Techniques)

Intermediate and Advanced

Ages 11- Adult

1 hour

Materials Fee: $30.00

Saturdays 1pm – 2pm

For students who preferably completed Basic Media and Techniques II (or has arranged an individual portfolio review with the instructor), this advanced course, students will further develop a creative approach to their drawing and painting using a variety of styles and artistic exercises.  Students will use a range of media such as charcoal, clay sculpture, acrylic paint, collage, printmaking and fabric art.  Projects will include, observational drawing, still life, collage, perspective, portraiture and figure drawing.

Digital Photography

Beginner/Intermediate

18-Adult

1.5 hours

Fridays 6:30pm – 8pm

Bring your own camera (SLR or point-and-shoot)

The digital photography course for adults focuses on the fundamental elements of digital photography from how to use a SLR camera and/or point-and-shoot to increase understanding and personal enjoyment.  The 17-week semester includes creating photo-essays, understanding of the narrative structure in a story using photos of a single item, and recognizing the elements of photographic composition that help convey a  compelling photographic story. To encourage students to develop their own voice in relationship to their audience of their peers, community and family, students will become skilled at editing their own work in preparation for an in-house exhibit. 

Digital Photography (Street/Environment Photography)

All Levels

18- Adult

Bring your own camera (SLR or point-and-shoot)

This course introduces students to the creative approaches to street or environmental photography.    Instruction includes discussion related to historical techniques and styles, students will practice photographing people, architecture, and street-scapes in downtown Newark.  Students will discuss and critique their work.

This course is open to beginners and advanced photographers. The instructor will assist beginner photographers with their digital SLR or point and shoot cameras.  More experienced photographers will benefit from the collaborative studio environment and will be encouraged to incorporate new approaches to capturing the street-scapes of Newark. 

Acrylic Painting Course I

Beginners

18- Adult

1.5 hours

Materials Fee: $35.00

Wednesdays 5:30pm – 7:00pm

In this fun and interesting class for the beginner painter, students will explore standard painting techniques such as, wet and dry brush painting, knife painting, glazing, and color mixing to eventually develop representational and/or abstract paintings.    Individualized guidance and critique are offered when appropriate.  Each painting class will encourage students to individually explore the depth and range acrylic painting has to offer.

 

Acrylic Painting Course II

Intermediate/Advanced

18- Adult

1.5 hours

Materials Fee: $35.00

Thursdays 5:30 pm – 7:00pm

Instructor: Armisey Smith

This course is designed to further build and enhance the methods and techniques of the student who has had exposure to acrylic painting. Students will be assisted individually in the development of their skills and execution of this very versatile medium. Both traditional and non-traditional approaches to acrylic painting will be addressed in this course. Students will focus on abstraction, collage, and the expressive nature of color. The emphasis will be on taking creative risks and further exploring individual expression.

Jewelry Design

Beginner

18-Adult

1.5 hours

Saturdays 12:30 – 2pm

Instructor: Enovia Bradford

Newark School of the Arts Jewelry Design course teaches you how to take your ideas and shape them into wonderful jewelry pieces for you, but your friends and family.  Over the course of 17 weeks, students will understand the fundamentals of beading, wiring, threading, etc. to create stunning jewelry pieces.

This course aims to help the student to design and create functional art through jewelry-making.  The goal of this course is to impart various techniques that will advance the students design skills and parlay that into creating premium jewelry.  Applications include bracelets, exquisite pendants/necklaces and statement pieces for personal use or to generate extra income.
