Fake Fundraisers Ask For Donations In The Caldwells: Superintendent

Here's what you need to know if someone comes to your door in the Caldwell-West Caldwell district and wants money for a school fundraiser.

CALDWELL, NJ — If someone comes to your door in the Caldwell-West Caldwell School District and claims to be raising money for a school fundraiser, there’s a chance something’s not on the level, officials say.

CWC Superintendent James Heinegg issued an alert to community members in the two townships on Monday evening about a possible donation scam perpetrated by “young people” in the area.

According to Heinegg:

“It has come to our attention that, over the weekend, some young people were going door-to-door in the area, asking for donations. The children told homeowners that it was a school fundraiser, and that the middle school was trying to raise money for technology. Our middle school is NOT running such a fundraiser, and in any case our district practice is not to have students go door-to-door for any kind of project.”

Heinegg said that school administrators are uncertain how widespread this type of false “fundraising” activity is, or whether the youths will attempt to continue it. He had one suggestion for local community members, however.

“If someone does come to your door with such a request, it is not legitimate,” he stated.
