Famed 'Dancing Crossing Guard' Mourned In The Caldwells, Fundraiser Honors His Memory

"Mr. Frank's Closet" would pay a well-deserved tribute to Frank Bolger. Here's how to contribute to the cause.

CALDWELLS, NJ — The West Caldwell community is honoring the legacy of its beloved, late “dancing crossing guard” with a campaign to create a youth outreach charity in his name.

Mr. Frank’s Closet would pay a well-deserved tribute to Frank Bolger, who became well-known in West Caldwell for his antics and catchy dance moves as a school crossing guard – most recently at Jefferson Elementary School.

Bolger, 71, a Roseland resident and Newark native, died March 18 after a brief illness. He also worked as a newspaper reporter and managed an electrical and lighting store in Montclair.

However, Bolger’s most recent career was his favorite, according to his obituary:

“Known and beloved as ‘Mr. Frank,’ the dancing crossing guard, he drew widespread community and media attention for his dance moves, eye-catching hat collection and friendly waves to all the passersby.”

Now, the community is trying to raise money to carry on Bolger’s mission. A GoFundMe campaign to create Mr. Frank’s Closet has seen more than $5,500 from nearly 100 donors as of Wednesday.

The new charity would provide clothing, school supplies and other everyday necessities to local children. Learn more or make a donation here.

“Mr. Frank was more than just a crossing guard at Jefferson School,” the campaign says. “He was a familiar smile, a steady presence, and someone who truly looked out for every child each and every day. He made kids feel safe, seen, and cared for—and that kindness left a lasting impact on our entire community.”

New Jersey Sen. Kristin Corrado, who represents the 40th district, also urged community members to pitch in.
