West Caldwell Mother, Infant Involved In Serious Car Crash: Police

A New Jersey woman displayed a heartrending show of motherly love on Thursday after a serious car crash in Essex County, police say.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A 38-year-old West Caldwell woman displayed a heartrending show of motherly love on Thursday after a serious car crash in Essex County, managing to pass her infant child safely out of the wreckage before collapsing with a life-threatening injury, according to police accounts.

The crash reportedly took place around 1:12 p.m. in front of 47 Greenbrook Road when the woman’s 1997 Mazda struck a utility pole. Luckily, the 16-month-old infant was properly strapped into a child safety seat at the time of the collision, the Fairfield Police Department stated.

According to police – despite her severe injuries - the woman was able to exit the vehicle, remove the child from the crash wreckage and hand him off to a bystander before passing out.

Emergency responders performed CPR on the woman and transported her to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson with “serious, life-threatening injuries,” Fairfield police said.

The child appeared uninjured but was taken to the hospital for evaluation, authorities stated.

The Fairfield Police Department traffic unit and investigative division are conducting an investigation into the crash with the consultation of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
