More Positive Coronavirus Cases Reported In North Caldwell

North Caldwell Mayor: "These increases should not create panic or overly alarm anyone. However, we must all take responsible actions."

NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — Officials in North Caldwell are asking residents to be responsible – but not to panic – as more confirmed cases of coronavirus emerge in the area.

On Saturday, North Caldwell township officials reported that another resident has tested positive for the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19, bringing the local total to four confirmed cases.

“Unfortunately, we anticipate that the number of positive cases will continue to rise as testing becomes more readily available to the public,” Mayor Joseph Alessi said. “It will be impossible for me to notify the borough of every positive case as these numbers will inevitably rise.”

“These increases should not create panic or overly alarm anyone,” Alessi added. “However, we must all take responsible actions.”

Alessi noted that Gov. Phil Murphy issued a statewide “stay at home” order on Saturday, which includes the closure of “non-essential” businesses. As of Saturday afternoon, 1,327 people in the state have tested positive for COVID-19 and 16 have died from the illness.

According to Alessi, Essex County officials are working with their state and federal counterparts to open a COVID-19 drive-thru testing facility for symptomatic individuals who have been pre-screened and given a scheduled appointment.

“We understand the seriousness of this matter and we are working hard towards focused efforts to be a part of the solution,” the mayor said.

North Caldwell township officials issued an emergency declaration regarding the virus last week, closing down several municipal buildings, cancelling municipal court sessions and shutting down local recreation facilities and fields.
