Mount Athletic Director to Receive Award of Merit

First athletic director from North 2 Non-Public School Group to receive award from Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey.

’s athletic teams excel in everything from swimming and track to softball and volleyball. Behind their sports programs' accomplishments is athletic director Lorenzo Sozio, who has been at the Mount for 11 years.

Sozio will be honored this week by the Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey (DAANJ) with the 2012 North 2 Sectional Award of Merit at their annual awards banquet in Atlantic City. He is the first Athletic Director from a Non-Public school to be recognized since the award’s inception in 2004.

Ted D’Alessio, chairman of the selection committee, said Sozio was chosen “for his distinguished leadership in the field of athletics.”

Sozio joined the school’s staff in 1996 as coach of the softball team, a position he continues to hold to this day.  

“I’m honored to receive this award,” Sozio stated in a release. “I can’t thank the administration and coaches at Mount Saint Dominic Academy enough, because without them, I wouldn’t be in position to win an award like this. It means a lot, and to be the first A.D. in the Non-Public Group to win it, is even more satisfying.”

In addition to his duties as the Mount's A.D., Sozio is also director of the Lady Lions Summer Sports Camps. The camps instruct girls entering fourth through ninth grade the fundamentals of volleyball, softball, basketball and soccer.

Sr. Frances Sullivan, OP, Head of School, remarked, “This is a well-deserved honor for Lorenzo, and it is an honor for us to work with him.”
