Incident second this month in borough, police to increase undercover patrols.

A jewelry box and other items were taken from a Mountain Avenue home Tuesday morning, North Caldwell Police Chief Mark Deuer said.

According to Deuer, residents of the home on the south end of the county road near Bloomfield Avenue left at 9 a.m., and when they returned at noon, found the master bedroom ransacked with a jewelry box and an undetermined amount of other jewelry missing.

Deuer said access was gained by kicking in a side door, but no fingerprints were found and no one in the area had seen anything. The incident is under investigation by Detective/Sgt. Bill Texas.

It's the second residential burglary reported in the borough this month. Jewelry was taken from the master bedroom of an Oak Place home sometime between Friday, July 3 and Monday, July 5 while the residents were on vacation.

According to Deuer, burglaries tend to increase during the summer when many residents are away. The chief said his department will increase its undercover patrols during the daytime hours and he reminded residents to be vigilant.

"We want to urge residents to use their alarms," Deuer said. "The summer is a typical time for burglaries. We need other residents' help and we ask that they keep their eyes open for anything suspicious going on in their neighborhood."
