Firefighters from multiple departments in Essex County battled a large blaze in Fairfield on that left a vacant house in shambles.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Firefighters from multiple departments in Essex County battled a large blaze in Fairfield on Tuesday morning that left a vacant house in shambles. Due to the “intense heat” from the fire – which was in close proximity to neighboring homes – emergency responders temporarily evacuated nearby houses, authorities said.

No injuries were reported during the incident, the Fairfield Fire Department said.

According to the Fairfield FD, the blaze took place around 4 a.m. at 39 Pier Lane. Mutual aid was provided by firefighters from North Caldwell, West Caldwell, Verona and Pine Brook. In addition, the West Essex First Aid Squad responded and provided “rehab” on scene.

Fairfield emergency responders first arrived at the scene after getting a call about the odor of smoke. They found the structure ablaze, with flames coming through the roof. Firefighters then began a “defensive attack” until they were able to enter the home.

The Fairfield Police Department, which was also on scene, wrote:

“There was a large amount of fire located in the rear of the house. As a precautionary measure because of the intense heat and proximity of the neighboring homes to the fire house, the adjacent homes were evacuated.”

Nobody was living in the home at the time of the fire. Fairfield officials will be conducting an investigation as to the cause of the blaze, police said.
