North Caldwell Police On George Floyd Death: 'Tragic, Inhumane'

NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — It’s been less than a week since George Floyd died in the custody of police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. But since then, a massive wave of anger, outrage – and hope – has swept the nation.

The North Caldwell Police Department offered a statement about Floyd's death on Sunday.

"Last night the North Caldwell Police [Department], along with all other county agencies, responded to Newark to assist with the protest over the incongruous death of George Floyd," police wrote. "We have watched the video footage of George Floyd being murdered at the hands of law enforcement many times. It was unacceptable, tragic and inhumane. All four officers involved MUST be held accountable for both their actions and for their lack of action to stop this senseless death!"

The NCPD continued:

"On the same day of Mr. Floyd’s death there were probably a million police/civilian encounters that were peaceful, respectful and problem solving oriented, because that is how we are trained and that’s the way it should be! We take an oath to protect and serve all people regardless of race, sex, religion or beliefs. The officers actions in Minnesota should not tarnish the rest of the hard working men and women in law enforcement just because they wear a badge. In light of this event please know that the NCPD as always will continue to support all people and treat people with dignity and respect. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. Floyd’s family their pain, grief and suffering is truly unimaginable."

MARCH IN CALDWELL, WEST CALDWELL

There's a march and vigil planned for Caldwell and West Caldwell on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The West Caldwell Police Department issued the following statement on Monday:

"Today we stood with chiefs and law enforcement executives from across the county and announced in one clear voice that we will not stand for excessive force and abuse of power. Tomorrow evening a planned march and vigil will be occurring in Caldwell and West Caldwell. The march begins at Grover Cleveland Park and ends at Crane Park where a candlelight vigil will be held in remembrance of George Floyd. Those attending the event please remember that the threat of COVID has not disappeared. Remember your social distancing and safety measures to keep one another safe."

"Please expect traffic delays and detours in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Clinton Road from approximately 7 to 9 p.m.," police stated.
