ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Route 46 in Fairfield reopened in both directions Wednesday night after a section was closed for more than 24 hours due to an accident and downed wires.

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the town of Fairfield sent a message to area residents, "Route 46 East is CLOSED in the area of Clinton Road and Route 46 West is CLOSED at Plymouth Street for a motor vehicle accident. Low hanging wires in the area. Closure time is unknown. Both sides of the highway are being detoured. AVOID the area until further notice."

Early Wednesday morning, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said there was a downed pole and wires on Route 46 in both directions west of Route 159/CR 627/Plymouth Road in Fairfield Township.

But after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Fairfield noted that the road had reopened in both directions at Clinton Road/Plymouth Street.

"Thank you for your patience," the township said.
