School Mask Mandate In North Caldwell: Board To Discuss Tuesday

NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — The North Caldwell Board of Education will discuss school mask mandate, the superintendent's agreement, and other issues at their meeting this Tuesday.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced a week ago Monday that the state's mask mandate for schools will be lifted in March — leaving it up to individual districts to make a decision.

Around Essex County, districts have given varied responses to the state's change:

• Masks will be optional in Livingston as of March 7.
• The South Orange-Maplewood district has not made a decision and will be looking at local COVID data before they decide, that district said in a public statement.
• Millburn announced Friday that they will make masks optional starting March 7.

As of now, New Jersey students will still have to mask up on school buses even after March 7.

The meeting will take place in person on Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Grandview School cafeteria, but there will also be a Zoom option (see link below). Those attending should enter the building through the side entrance by the library.

Masks are required at the meeting, unless the person has a documented exception.

A communication from the board said, "At the meeting, the board will discuss the March 7th expiration of Governor Murphy's Executive Order 251 (the school mask mandate) and any impact on District policy. Also on the agenda for approval is an extension of the Superintendent's
agreement."
