THE CALDWELLS, NJ — The icy overnight forecast for the area forced schools in Caldwell, North Caldwell, and West Caldwell to announce delayed openings for Friday. The school districts will update the messages if necessary.

"We will reassess in the morning to determine if we will have a snow day," said North Caldwell.

A hazardous weather outlook for Essex County says: "A wintry mix of snow and sleet is expected to develop Thursday night into early Friday morning. The precipitation then changes to freezing rain and rain after day break Friday morning. Impacts to the Friday morning commute are possible, especially away from the immediate coast where the wintry mix hangs on longest before a changeover to plain rain."
