'Spoon River Project' Wins Theatre Night Award

Production received nine nominations, more than any of the 51 participating high schools.

’s production of The Spoon River Project walked away with a trophy for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast Friday at Montclair State University’s Theatre Night Awards.

In addition to Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Cast, nominations included: Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design, Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Design, Outstanding Achievement in Set Design, Outstanding Achievement in Live Music, Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role-Sarah Garvey, Outstanding Achievement in Stage Direction-Jensyn Modero and Outstanding Production of a Drama.

“I was excited when we were nominated,” director Jensyn Modero stated in a release from Caldwell-West Caldwell schools. “But, when I heard our name called for best overall ensemble, I was thrilled. I feel like we are on our way to becoming a state-wide recognized theater program.”

At the awards ceremony, senior Sarah Garvey performed a selection from the play accompanied by senior Chris White on violin.

“The playwright Tom Andolora was in attendance and was able to present us with the award, which was very special for all involved,” added Modero.

This was the first year Caldwell entered the competition. A DVD of the production was submitted and judged in three tiers. First, Montclair theater production students viewed the DVD, followed by alumni and theater professionals, and finally, a director from Montclair State University made the final assessment.

“This is something new for us,” stated music director Scott Chamberlain. “It is very exciting and supports what we have always said about our music and theater students. They are truly dedicated, talented individuals.”
