This Week in Sports Around The Caldwells

The Region 4 wrestling tournament will kick off this week at West Orange High School with the pre-quarterfinal round on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The quarterfinals will be Friday at 6 p.m., and the semifinals and finals will begin Saturday at 9 a.m.

West Essex and Caldwell High will be well-represented with grapplers looking to place in the top-three in their respective weight classes to earn a trip to the state finals, March 4 to 7, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The Knights, who placed third in District 13, will send eight wrestlers to Region 4, including five district champions: Carlo Zazzara (103 pounds), Mike Marotti (112), Anthony Perrotti (119), Jimmy Ciampi (125) and John LoCascio (215). Ciampi's crown was his third consecutive District 13 championship at a third different weight class.

The Chiefs pushed six wrestlers into Region 4 with just one district champ: Dave Pepe (135).

District champs will receive a bye in Tuesday's pre-quarterfinals.

West Essex's Mike Markey, a former wrestler for Caldwell, was named the District 13 Assistant Coach of the Year.

The top-seeded West Essex ice hockey team will meet fourth-seeded Montclair Kimberly in the Northern Conference semifinals of the McInnis Cup. The puck will drop Wednesday at 4:15 p.m. at Codey Arena in West Orange.

• The Mt. St. Dominic Academy swimming team, No. 3 in the NJSIAA Non-Public B Tournament, will travel to Martinsville to face perennial power, second-seeded Pingry, in the semifinals. The meet is Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. at The Pingry School.
