West Caldwell Man, Cop, Charged With Sexually Assaulting Young Girl: Authorities
Manny Marques, 36, of West Caldwell, a 14-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, has been suspended without pay, police say.
West Caldwell, NJ - Essex County prosecutors have charged a Newark police officer with sexually assaulting a young girl, authorities said.
On Sept. 10, police arrested Manny Marques, 36, of West Caldwell, a 14-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, and charged him with first degree aggravated sexual assault and third degree child endangerment, prosecutors stated.
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose announced Wednesday that Marques was immediately suspended without pay after his arrest.

Marques is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility, prosecutors stated.
Essex County prosecutors said that the charges against Marques were not related to his work as a police officer and that an investigation is underway.

Newark Fraternal Order of Police President James Stewart Jr. told NJ.com that the charges were "horrible and shocking, and completely out of character."
