West Caldwell Soccer Players Return To Alma Mater, Repair Trophy

James Caldwell High School soccer players got a visit from two members of the 1966 JCHS Group 3 State Championship team.

West Caldwell, NJ – James Caldwell High School soccer players had a blast from the past on March 1, when the West Caldwell school was visited by two members from the 1966 JCHS Group 3 State Championship team.

According to a school news release, 1966 team members Glenn Mars and Karl Schricke met with several members of this year’s team and repaired the championship trophy from the 1966 season, which is now visible in the school’s central trophy case.

Mars is a member of the JCHS Hall of Fame.

The 1966 team will hold a reunion and honored during the annual “Colonel John McHugh Memorial Soccer Saturday” on Sept. 17. Any members of the 1966 team that would like to take part in the festivities can email gmarspfa@aol.com.

According to a release, the annual Colonel John McHugh Memorial Soccer Saturday honors the 1982 JCHS graduate and captain of the state championship soccer team that year, Colonel John McHugh.

“McHugh attended West Point where he was the starting goal keeper and captain of the West Point Soccer Program,” school administrators stated in a news release. “He served our nation for many years and became the highest ranking member of the military to be killed in action in May of 2010.”

In 2011, to honor his dedication and sacrifice, the annual soccer event was renamed to Colonel John McHugh Memorial Soccer Saturday.
