West Caldwell Student Named as Finalist in National Merit Scholarship Program
Becomes one of 15,000 students nationwide selected for recognition.

Joshua Kopen, a senior at James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, was named as a finalist in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.
According to a release, approximately 15,000 semifinalists nationwide, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have advanced to finalist standing. High school principals are notified and provided with a certificate to present to each finalist.
“Josh has made us proud,” stated JCHS principal Kevin Barnes in a release. “We would like to extend our congratulations and thanks to him for representing our school and state in such a positive way.”

According to a release, to become a finalist, a semi-finalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the earlier qualifying performance. Semi-finalists represent less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors, representing the highest scoring entrants in each state.
