West Essex Earth & Environmental Science Students Create Volcanoes

 

West Essex High School Ninth graders taking Earth and Environmental Science worked in groups to build themed-volcanoes and then used a combination of red wine vinegar and baking soda to make them erupt in class, said teacher Jamie Wall.

West Essex staff were asked to vote for their favorite volcanoes before the students made them erupt. The winners were:

1st Place: Mt. Bikini Bottom

2nd Place: Crystal Peak

3rd Place: Andy's Mountain

"Making a volcano was so great," said Joe Torter of Essex Fells, adding he learned "that volcanoes release many toxic gases."

'I learned how destructive volcanoes can be," said Steven Lucero.

"They have a fast-moving lava flow which is very dangerous and can travel up to 100 miles per hour and incinerate from the inside out," added Koji Lewis of Roseland.
